Reality TV presents unscripted melodramatic or humorous situations, documents actual events, and features ordinary people rather than professional actors. This genre of television became a phenomenon around 1999-2000 with the major success of television series like Big Brother and Survivor. Reality TV is so popular with the public because it has a variety of personalities and keeps you wanting more. As opposed to sitcoms or soap operas (scripted), it features the lives of real people which automatically makes it more intriguing. The reality of the shows and the stars can make viewers relate to their drama and challenges they may be facing. Viewers also enjoy the unscripted reality shows because it allows them to see into the lives of another.
